Job Description

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats face to face remote and online. Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and/or up to 8 credit hours during summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Duties and Tasks

• Teach specific classes in the designated discipline • Develop course syllabi and instructional materials • Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS • Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization

Essential Functions

As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly submit required records and reports routinely teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

Must reside in the DC VA MD DMV area.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to develop and adapt teaching and learning strategies to accommodate the diversity of community college students. • Ability to use formative and summative assessment measures to enhance student learning. • Experience with or ability to utilize proven teaching strategies that promote student success. • Ability to use or incorporate emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods to enhance classroom instruction. • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. • Available to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes. • Knowledge of major concepts, theories, and subject matter in Finance. Subjects in the discipline include but are not limited to Personal Finance, Securities, Investment, Credit Union Operations, Corporate and/or Small Business Financial Management.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in the teaching field or associate degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies. • Qualifying fields for degree can include business administration, business management, finance, accounting, and taxation. • Qualifying academic degree must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution. • A minimum of two years of full-time related occupational experience. • Part-time occupational experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent.

• Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, virtual-synchronous, and online formats. • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment. • Experience in teaching college-level business or business-related courses. • Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency. • Experience teaching in a classroom at a community college. • Five or more years occupational experience in mid-level management.
