Summary Statement

Join a team dedicated to inclusive recreation by leading programs, camps, and community-based activities for individuals with disabilities. This position plays a key role in ensuring activities are safe, engaging, and well-coordinated, while exercising independent judgment and supporting staff and supervisors in delivering high-quality experiences. This position is open to all applicants age 19 and older.

Essential Functions

  • Leads groups of adults with disabilities involved with Boise Parks and Recreations adaptive recreation program on pre-established activities and outings in the community such as bowling, sporting events, movies, dinner, dances, etc. Assists supervisor and staff in coordinating safe, fun and appropriate activities. Will be required to drive a 12-or 15-passenger van to transport participants to/from activities.
  • Ensures the safety of the participants while in the community. Properly manages money for group activities in the community.
  • Occasionally works one-on-one with individuals with disabilities so they can fully integrate into parks and recreation programs.
  • Acts as liaison between parks and recreation and activity destinations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts managements right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Six months experience volunteering or working with individuals with disabilities.

Working knowledge of:

  • Best practices and inclusion techniques for working with/teaching individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities.

Ability to:

  • Provide instruction to individuals with disabilities.
  • Communicate and establish rapport with participants of all ages and ability levels.
  • Deal with the public, coworkers and supervisors in a friendly and tactful manner.
  • Recognize and redirect misbehavior.
  • Use strong human relations and organizational skills.
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations.
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • One year of experience working with individuals with disabilities and teaching classes or leading programs with multiple participants
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR.

Licensing And Other Requirements

  • Valid state-issued drivers license.

Applicants must be able to pass:

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds. The noise level is always moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand and walk. Additional physical efforts include: must be able to transfer individuals in and out of adaptive equipment and to physically react quickly..

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.Will be leading programs inside of community centers and out in the public.

19-Hour Temporary

All temporary part-time employees working less than an average of 19-hours per week are not currently eligible for benefits.

4-Month Temporary

All 4-month temporary employees working an average of 40-hours per week will accrue personal leave which can be used during employment.

8-Month Seasonal

In addition to accruing personal leave, anyone in an 8-month seasonal position working over an average of 30-hours per week is eligible for medical coverage.

9-Month Temporary

In addition to personal leave accrual and medical coverage, a position that is classified as a 9-month temporary is eligible for PERSI retirement benefits.
