The ADA/Section 504 Coordinator serves as the universitys designated officer responsible for leading and facilitating institutional compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and all related federal and state regulations. Reporting to the Office of General Counsel, this role provides strategic leadership and oversight to ensure equitable access to university programs, services, activities, and employment.

Working across academic and administrative units, the coordinator advances a campus-wide accessibility approach by guiding policy development, overseeing accommodation and grievance processes, and mitigating institutional risk. The position plays a central role in fostering an environment where students, employees, applicants, and visitors can fully participate in university life, free from disability-based discrimination. This position reports to the General Counsel.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Higher Education, Public Administration, Law, Human Resources, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in ADA/Section 504 coordination, disability services, human resources accommodations, compliance, or investigations
  • Demonstrated experience managing processes and conducting or supporting impartial investigations
  • Knowledge of applicable disability laws and regulations and their application in higher education or a comparable setting

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Masters degree in Public Administration, Higher Education, Law, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in ADA/Section 504 coordination, compliance, or investigations
  • Experience responding to or supporting reviews, complaints, or investigations from the Office for Civil Rights or similar regulatory bodies
  • Strong judgment and ability to interpret medical documentation, essential job functions, and academic requirements
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience navigating complex, high-impact accommodation and compliance scenarios in higher education

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of the General Counsel, as a unit of the Chancellors Division, provides, manages, and coordinates all legal services for UNCW in a collegial, responsive, and professional manner. The office provides these services on university matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the senior officers, other university administrators, staff, and faculty who are acting on behalf of the university. The attorneys and legal staff are committed to rendering high quality, cost effective, and responsive legal and risk management advice to facilitate the achievements of UNCWs goals of teaching, research, scholarship, and service. The goal of our office is to provide professional advice minimizing risk, reducing litigation, and identifying and responding to legal issues affecting the university.

The Office of the General Counsel researches the law and advises the university on compliance with applicable federal and state law and regulations and UNC policies, drafts and/or reviews contracts, grants, and license agreements, and advises on a wide variety of legal and risk management matters to include employment, student affairs, business affairs, advancement, litigation, civil rights, public records, real property, public finance, facilities development, sponsored programs, and intellectual property matters. The office is responsible for selecting, engaging, and supervising any outside counsel retained by the university. We represent the university in a variety of administrative proceedings and coordinate all litigation conducted by the North Carolina Attorney Generals Office on behalf of the university.
