The Vascular Surgery Service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has an exciting opportunity for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join their team of board-certified vascular surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers. The Vascular Surgery team at HUP is part of the Department of Surgery and provides comprehensive care to patients undergoing vascular surgery for both chronic and acute conditions, as well as management of complex co-morbidities throughout the inpatient stay.

As an NP/PA on this service, you will be part of a high-functioning, inter-professional team responsible for the management of complex and critically ill vascular surgery patients, including those with advanced peripheral arterial disease, chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), diabetic foot disease, and non-healing wounds. The role includes a significant focus on participation in and advancement of a multidisciplinary inpatient Limb Preservation Program, aimed at optimizing limb salvage, reducing amputation risk, and improving patient outcomes through coordinated, evidence-based care.

Responsibilities for the NP/PA who joins our team will include comprehensive inpatient management, autonomous clinical decision-making within scope of practice, performance of procedures according to credentialing, complex discharge planning and transitions in care, care coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and education of patients, families, and staff. Within the Limb Preservation Program, the APP will play a key role in early identification of patients at risk for limb loss, coordination of vascular, podiatric, wound care, infectious disease, and rehabilitation services, and facilitation of timely diagnostic evaluation, revascularization planning, and post-procedural management.

The NP/PA will actively participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and care conferences related to limb preservation and wound management, contribute to the development and implementation of clinical pathways and protocols aimed at limb salvage, and support continuity of care across the inpatient and post-acute settings. Responsibilities also include monitoring outcomes, supporting quality metrics related to limb preservation, and engaging patients in shared decision-making regarding treatment options.

In addition, the provider will participate in research as applicable, ensure regulatory compliance, document care according to institutional and professional standards, and prescribe in accordance with their collaborative agreement and applicable State regulations.

The NP/PA will provide high-quality care across the continuum in collaboration with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team, and will be expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of their professional practice. Beyond clinical responsibilities, the role includes active participation in the Department’s Quality Improvement initiatives and Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL), including projects related to limb preservation, wound care optimization, and reduction of preventable amputations. Opportunities for professional growth and development are available through involvement in research, lecturing, publications, and participation in departmental and hospital committees and initiatives.

All ACNPs and PA-C’s function under guidelines established by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff and are credentialed through that body. The CRNP or PA hired will be held accountable through a formal job description, delineation of privileges, and a Collaborative Practice Agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician.

Credentials:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
• BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required
• Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant required
• Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Pennsylvania State license, active and in good standing at time of hire
• Prescriptive Authority (Required)
• Registered Nurse - PA (Required if Acute Care Nurse Practitioner)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• Education Specialization: Master's Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing or Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate Degree – Physician Assistant - Required
• Graduate of Accredited Physician Assistant Training Program (PA-C) – Required
• The CRNP and/or PA-C must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.
