Job Description:
Secretary I - Shaw Elementary School (2026-2027 School Year)
The Norwalk Board of Education is seeking a Secretary I for Shaw Elementary School. This position provides administrative and clerical support while helping maintain a welcoming, organized, and efficient school office environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the main office receptionist and assist visitors, parents, students, and staff.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and manage correspondence.
- Support student attendance processes, including recording absences, tardiness, early dismissals, and maintaining attendance reports.
- Assist with student transportation records, bus assignments, and dismissal procedures.
- Organize and maintain office files, records, mail distribution, and bulletin boards.
- Operate office equipment including computers, printers, scanners, copiers, intercoms, and school entry systems.
- Support school activities by processing forms, managing paperwork, handling deposits, and coordinating transportation and related services.
- Access and utilize PowerSchool and other office software systems.
- Assist with PTO and district mailings, student obligation letters, and Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meeting preparation.
- Maintain inventory and distribute office supplies.
- Handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Registry Clerk Duties (when applicable):
In addition to the responsibilities above, organize and maintain student achievement and testing data.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two years of office support or secretarial experience above the clerk level.
- College coursework in secretarial sciences may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
- Spanish fluency may be required.
- Equivalent qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent or designee.
Required Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- Organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
- Proficiency with office software and student information systems.
- Knowledge of office procedures and basic business math.
Working Conditions:
The role involves frequent computer use, sitting, standing, walking, and interaction with students, staff, parents, and visitors. Occasional lifting of supplies up to 10 pounds may be required.
Position Details:
- Schedule: Monday-Friday, 27.5 hours per week
- Work Year: August-June (11 months)
- Salary: $26.98-$32.21 per hour
- Bargaining Unit: NFEP, Group Two
