Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly qualified Accounting Manager to join our finance team. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the company, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all financial data, and providing the financial leadership necessary to support a growing contracting operation in the Houston metropolitan market.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in construction or contracting finance, a thorough understanding of GAAP, and the discipline and attention to detail required to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. This is a mid-level position for a professional who is prepared to take ownership of the accounting function, lead a small team, and serve as a trusted financial resource for operations and executive leadership.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Construction Accounting Manager will be responsible for the following functions in support of operations leadership and executive management:
Manage and oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and bank reconciliations
Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including the preparation of accurate internal financial statements and management reporting packages
Own and maintain comprehensive job costing, project profitability analysis, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting functions essential to the financial performance of a mechanical contracting business
Help establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures consistent with GAAP and company standards to ensure financial accuracy and compliance
Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for external audits, tax filings, bonding requirements, and financial reviews
Collaborate with project managers and field operations leadership on the financial components of HVAC and mechanical projects, including change orders, retainage tracking, lien waivers, and contract billing
Lead the annual budgeting process and assist executive leadership with financial forecasting, cash flow management, and variance analysis
Oversee the preparation and submission of Texas sales tax filings, payroll tax compliance, and any applicable multi-entity reporting requirements
Supervise accounting staff, establishing a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement within the department
Research and resolve complex accounting issues, ensuring continued compliance with applicable regulations and construction industry best practices
Serve as the primary financial point of contact for external auditors, tax professionals, banking relationships, and bonding agents
Provide executive leadership with ad-hoc financial analysis, reporting, and strategic support as required
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field; CPA designation or active candidacy strongly preferred
Minimum of 3-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2–3 years in a management or supervisory role within a construction or contracting environment
Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
Demonstrated hands-on experience with job costing, project-based accounting, WIP reporting, and the percentage-of-completion method
Experience with construction-specific accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, Foundation, or comparable platforms, as well as advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Thorough understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions in a contracting environment
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities with an uncompromising standard of accuracy and attention to detail
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to translate financial information for non-finance personnel across operations and project management
Preferred:
CPA licensure or documented progress toward completion of CPA requirements
Familiarity with Texas sales tax regulations, multi-entity payroll compliance, and construction contract billing including AIA billing formats
Experience managing accounting for a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or general contracting company
Prior experience in a small-to-mid-sized company environment.
Familiarity with bonding, insurance certificates, and subcontractor compliance documentation
