Our client is a globally recognized retail, fashion and lifestyle brand headquartered in Japan and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Following the successful establishment of their US entity, they are now expanding operations across North America with plans to launch retail stores and e-commerce operations over the coming years.

Client Details

The business currently has approximately 100 employees in the US and operates out of Manhattan, with leadership teams based across New York, Japan, and San Francisco. As part of their continued growth, they are looking to hire an Accounting Manager to lead finance operations in the US and support the build-out of the corporate infrastructure.

This is a highly visible opportunity reporting directly into senior leadership both in the US and Japan. The successful candidate will play a key role in building scalable finance processes, implementing accounting policies, and supporting the next stage of the company's expansion. The role is fully office-based in Manhattan.


Description

The successful Accounting Manager will:

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
  • Oversee the general ledger, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepare financial statements including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement
  • Prepare and submit consolidated accounting packages to global leadership
  • Conduct variance analysis and reporting for senior management
  • Manage federal, state, and local tax filings and ensure compliance with US tax regulations
  • Support tax audits and assist with corporate tax strategy initiatives
  • Coordinate with external auditors and prepare audit documentation
  • Improve internal controls and accounting processes as the business scales
  • Support payroll processing and HR-related administrative operations
  • Assist with bringing currently outsourced accounting and administrative functions in-house over time
  • Implement global accounting policies and procedures within the US entity
  • Partner closely with leadership teams in both the US and Japan
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and broader financial planning initiatives
  • Help build and expand the finance and administration function as the US business grows
  • Take on ad hoc operational, finance, and business initiatives in a fast-paced start-up style environment

Profile

The successful Accounting Manager will have:

  • 5+ years of accounting and finance experience
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced or high-growth environment
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and financial reporting
  • Experience with tax compliance and audit coordination
  • Hands-on, adaptable mentality with willingness to build processes from the ground up
  • Strong ERP systems experience (SAP, Oracle NetSuite, or similar)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with international teams
  • Management or leadership experience preferred
  • Prior experience working for a Japanese or international company is highly preferred
  • IFRS or Japanese GAAP exposure is advantageous
  • Retail, apparel, or consumer industry experience is beneficial
  • CPA qualification preferred
  • Happy to work full-time in the office in Manhattan
