Overview

Our client is an ambitious, privately held junior exploration and production company specialising in oil resources across Colorado. With a growing asset portfolio and a management team committed to operational excellence, the organisation has reached an inflection point where strengthening its financial backbone is critical to supporting accelerated drilling activity and stakeholder confidence. To that end, the company is looking to appoint an Accounting Manager who will anchor the finance department and bring structure, rigour, and scalability to its accounting operations.

This role is ideal for a motivated accounting professional who is energised by the pace of a growing upstream operator and who wants meaningful visibility into business decisions. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager will own the integrity of the general ledger, drive continuous improvement in reporting processes, and act as a key liaison between the finance function and operational leadership as the company executes on its multi-year development plan.

Core Duties

  • Manage and oversee the complete month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring all entries are accurate, timely, and in accordance with US GAAP and industry-specific accounting standards.
  • Supervise the preparation of financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules for internal leadership, board reporting, and external stakeholders including lenders and private equity partners.
  • Maintain and enforce internal controls over financial reporting, safeguarding company assets and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee oil and gas revenue accounting, including joint interest billing, production revenue allocation, royalty calculations, and working interest reconciliations across all operated and non-operated properties.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting for drilling programmes, well completions, facilities, and equipment in accordance with the full cost or successful efforts method as adopted by the organisation.
  • Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and interim reviews, preparing workpapers and responding to audit enquiries in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Administer accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions, ensuring proper coding to cost centres, authorisation for expenditures, and timely vendor payments.
  • Support the budgeting and forecasting process by providing accurate historical data, variance analyses, and cost trend reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and operations leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax obligations, including severance taxes, ad valorem taxes, and production-related levies specific to Colorado oil and gas operations.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of staff accountants and accounting clerks by establishing clear expectations, conducting performance reviews, and fostering professional growth.
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems, workflows, and technology platforms to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability as the organisation grows.
  • Partner with land, regulatory, and operations teams to ensure that lease obligations, joint operating agreements, and contractual commitments are accurately reflected in the financial records.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial reporting, including no fewer than 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity within the oil and gas, energy, or natural resources sector.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, with particular fluency in ASC 932 (Extractive Activities — Oil and Gas) and related upstream accounting standards.
  • Proven experience managing full-cycle accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets, and financial close processes.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and oil and gas accounting software (e.g., SAP, Sage, WolfePak, Enertia, or similar platforms).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with Colorado severance tax, ad valorem tax, and other state-specific production-related tax and reporting obligations.
  • Willingness to travel to field offices and operational sites as needed (up to 15%).

Desired Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licence, active or in progress.
  • Experience with joint interest accounting, revenue distribution, and working interest owner reporting in a multi-entity upstream environment.
  • Public accounting background with audit experience in the oil and gas or extractive industries.
  • Familiarity with private equity reporting requirements, capital call accounting, and investor communications.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with business intelligence or data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Understanding of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) disclosure frameworks as they relate to financial reporting and sustainability metrics in the energy sector.
  • Knowledge of lease accounting standards (ASC 842) and their application to upstream mineral leases, surface use agreements, and equipment financing arrangements.
