Kforce has a client that is seeking an Accountant (State & Local Government) in Woodbridge, VA. Summary: We are seeking a detail oriented Accountant to support financial operations within a state or local government environment. The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining financial records, completing reconciliations, preparing financial reports, supporting audits, and ensuring compliance with governmental accounting standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience working with municipalities, counties, school districts, public authorities, or other government entities and possess a strong understanding of governmental accounting principles. Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Maintain and analyze general ledger accounts
  • Assist with month end, quarter end, and year end closing activities
  • Prepare financial statements, budget reports, and supporting schedules
  • Support annual audits and respond to auditor requests
  • Monitor expenditures and revenues to ensure compliance with budgets, grant requirements, and governmental regulations
  • Assist with grant accounting, including tracking grant funding, expenditures, and reporting requirements
  • Review and reconcile bank accounts, cash accounts, and other balance sheet accounts
  • Ensure compliance with GASB, GAAP, and applicable state and local government regulations
  • Assist with preparation of reports for governing boards, state agencies, and other regulatory bodies
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls
  • Collaborate with department leaders, budget teams, procurement, and payroll personnel to support financial operations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2+ years of accounting experience
  • Experience working in a state, county, municipal, school district, public authority, or other government environment
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
