This position serves as a core technical and operational pillar within the finance department for a mission-driven non-profit supporting justice-system impacted individuals and their families. As the Accountant, you will work in close partnership with the Director of Finance and Accounting Specialist to maintain internal controls, execute monthly closing procedures, and ensure full GAAP compliance. Operating as a fully contributing member of the team, this role balances day-to-day general ledger operations with insightful funder analysis and cross-departmental financial guidance.

You will serve as an accessible, in-person resource for staff across the agency regarding purchasing, reimbursements, and financial processes, while managing contract invoicing, donor-restricted fund releases, and audit preparation in a supportive environment.


Key Responsibilities



  • Financial Close Operations: Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, general invoicing, banking, cash reconciliations, and payroll journal entries for monthly and fiscal year-end close.

  • Financial Statement Drafts: Prepare first drafts of agency financial statements and supporting meeting agendas for review with the Director of Finance.

  • Contract & Funder Management: Generate contract invoices, prepare revenue accruals, track allowable versus unallowable expenses, and maintain forecast reports for funder activities.

  • General Ledger & Allocations: Create general ledger accounts, review transaction accuracy, analyze donor-restricted funds, and post journal entries for prepaids, depreciation, and expense allocations.

  • Audit & Compliance Support: Assist in completing annual audit schedules for external CPAs, government funders, and workers' compensation reviews, while overseeing 1099 vendor analyses.

  • Shared Leadership & Inclusion: Participate in cross-departmental teams, equity initiatives, and employee resource groups to support organizational growth and inclusive practices.


Requirements



  • 3 to 4 years of progressive experience in finance, corporate accounting, or non-profit bookkeeping.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal control frameworks.

  • Strong proficiency in spreadsheet applications, database management, and core office software.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate respectfully with diverse teams.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license, access to an insured vehicle during work hours, and the ability to pass standard background and pre-employment checks.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Working knowledge of non-profit fund accounting principles.

  • Experience utilizing specialized accounting platforms such as Financial Edge.

  • Familiarity with automated payroll platforms like Paylocity.
