Job Description

Department: Student Accounts and Sponsored Programs (Accounts Receivable)

General Statement of Job

The Accountant II assists with various accounting functions in the Accounts Receivable area of the Business Office. The Accountant II is responsible for reconciling third party restricted funds, financial analysis, reviews, analyzes and invoices contract training agreements, prepares management and board reports, assists with financial audits, and accounting system maintenance. May supervise accounting assistants and accounting specialists if needed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:
  • Maintains and reconciles general ledger and subsidiary ledger accounts.
  • Manages an assigned portfolio of restricted funds, applying specialized knowledge, and interpreting internal policies and procedures.
  • Prepares journal entries to record and adjust financial records with supporting documentation as needed.
  • Gathers and organizes data for contractual budget changes.
  • Tracks documentation, uploads documents, communicates with departments, and resolves all accounting issues related to restricted third-party receivable funds including payment status.
  • Analyzes and monitors contractual agreements and third-party student sponsoring awards to ensure awards are managed in accordance with administrative restrictions, reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Leads or assigns work to accounting assistants and part-time staff within the Accounts Receivable area of the Business Office, as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Student Financial Services staff, vendors, and third-party student sponsoring agencies concerning financial accounting issues, as needed.
  • Serves as an information resource for faculty, staff, vendors, and third-party student sponsoring agencies regarding financial support, as needed.
  • Prepares financial and management reports related to third party student sponsoring funds and other Business Office functions.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
  • Investigates discrepancies and resolves questions and issues related to the assigned accounting functions; properly escalates unresolved matters to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintains record retention of all documents within the Accounts Receivable area of the Business Office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • At least three (3) years of accounting experience required.
  • Experience in a higher education institution, preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  • Proficient in preparation of worksheets using Excel.
  • Familiarity with accounting functions and compliance with laws pertaining to assigned functions.
