Serves as the academic advisor and student success coordinator for the College of Nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works individually with nursing pathway and/or ADN nursing students in identifying courses to build a matriculation plan and assist them in assessing educational goals;
  • Meets regularly with students to review academic history, assess academic performance and adjust academic plans;
  • Utilizes the Fairmont State University Undergraduate Catalog and provides information on school/departmental procedures to ensure accurate information is being provided to the students;
  • Advocates on behalf of the student when necessary, this includes but is not limited to referring students to other offices or resources when personal situations impeded the students' academic success;
  • Represents the College of Nursing at recruiting events, which sometimes are scheduled in the evenings and/or weekends;
  • Represents the College of Nursing at all orientation events and back to school events and helps prepare schedules ahead of time;
  • Provides timely, appropriate and accurate information on majors, admissions requirements, career information, resources and follow-up;
  • Calculates grade point averages and deficiency points;
  • Presents students with alternative academic programs as appropriate and warranted;
  • Assists students in identifying and analyzing solutions to academic concerns/problems;
  • Develops, hosts, and presents academic information workshops;
  • Interprets the University catalog along with competitive program requirements for the purposes of advising;
  • Identifies and provides intensive advising for academically at-risk students, students with disabilities, athletes, and transfer students;
  • Uses web services and software programs such as Banner, Felix, Degree Works, Microsoft Office, email, College of Nursing w drive, Blackboard, TaskStream, and TutorTrac;
  • Responds to student inquiries and communicates via email, phone, letters, and/or in person in regards to admissions criteria, application procedures, and general questions;
  • Reviews and maintains case notes on each student interaction, ensuring strict security and confidentiality;
  • Establishes and/or maintains a record keeping system and enters data into records or into system databases as appropriate and as needed;
  • Performs periodic evaluations of the advisees to assess their educational needs and perception of the services provided, satisfaction of the staff, and values of the services offered;
  • Participates in departmental and institutional committees and groups that develop programs, responses, and interventions for students;
  • Meets with supervisor to resolve issues and concerns;
  • Utilizes a combination of intrusive, developmental, prescriptive, and appreciative advising techniques to empower students in formulating and clarifying life, career, and educational goals;
  • Promotes the development of suitable educational plans and options consistent with their life and career plans;
  • Supports and guides students in developing effective decision-making skills;
  • Helps to identify environmental conditions that may negatively influence student academic achievement and works to neutralize such conditions;
  • Focuses on retention of students and their academic success; at key times, focuses on students recovering from academic warnings/probations/suspensions.
  • Assist in management of the College of Nursing website, and,
  • Performs other appropriate duties as necessary and as assigned.

Minimum Required Education

Bachelor degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Required Qualifications

A minimum of two years of experience working in an advising capacity with students in higher education; however, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience is acceptable which provides an applicant the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and the capability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of institutional and financial aid policies and procedures, FERPA regulations, CAS Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising, and the NACADA Core Values of Academic Advising required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong problem solving skills.
