The Academic Dean of STEM serves as the instructional leader responsible for driving achievement across STEM, Science, and related STEM coursework. This leader owns academic outcomes, instructional quality, curriculum alignment, and teacher development within the STEM department.

The Academic Dean of STEM ensures scholars master rigorous content, demonstrate analytical thinking, and are prepared for advanced coursework and college-level expectations. This role requires deep content expertise, strong coaching ability, and a data-driven leadership approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Vision & Strategy

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive STEM instructional strategy aligned to campus academic goals.
  • Ensure standards-aligned curriculum implementation across grade levels.
  • Establish consistent expectations for lesson rigor, problem-solving, discourse, and assessment alignment.
  • Ensure vertical alignment from foundational skills to advanced STEM coursework.
  • Promote real-world application and analytical reasoning in instruction.

Academic Achievement Ownership

  • Lead STEM data analysis cycles using interim, benchmark, and state assessment data.
  • Identify trends, gaps, and subgroup performance disparities.
  • Develop and monitor action plans to improve proficiency and growth.
  • Drive measurable increases in math and science achievement.
  • Ensure targeted interventions are implemented with fidelity.

Teacher Coaching & Development

  • Conduct frequent classroom observations focused on rigor, engagement, and conceptual understanding.
  • Provide structured coaching cycles and actionable feedback.
  • Lead STEM professional learning communities (PLCs).
  • Support lesson planning, assessment design, and differentiation strategies.
  • Mentor new STEM teachers and build leadership capacity within the department.

Intervention & Acceleration Systems

  • Oversee STEM intervention supports for scholars below grade levels
  • Develop enrichment and acceleration opportunities for advanced learners.
  • Monitor tutoring, small-group, and academic support programming.

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise STEM teachers (as assigned).
  • Conduct formal evaluations and growth planning.
  • Support hiring and onboarding of STEM staff.

Accountability & Performance Metrics

The Academic Dean of STEM is accountable for:

  • Math and science proficiency rates
  • Growth metrics
  • Reduction in achievement gaps
  • Intervention effectiveness
  • Instructional rigor across classrooms
  • Teacher development and retention

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's Degree in Education or related STEM field preferred
  • Valid Wisconsin teaching license
  • Administrative license preferred (or eligibility)
  • Demonstrated success improving math or science outcomes
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Experience coaching and developing teachers
  • Deep content expertise in STEM disciplines
