The primary role of the Academic Advisor is to provide effective advising to students intending to major in one or more of the departments within the college. The Academic Advisor in this role will provide comprehensive guidance to students from initial enrollment through graduation. The advisor will offer timely, accurate information and support to help students make informed academic decisions, while collaborating closely with faculty mentors to enhance student development and overall academic success.
Approximately 90% of the position is focused on providing effective academic advising to students pursuing majors within HCAS. This includes assisting students with making appropriate course selections, guiding students towards major and career exploration, educating students on various academic policies and procedures, keeping students aware of important deadlines, and referring students to various resources as needed. Other duties may include teaching a section of COAD1000, the freshman seminar course, assisting with graduation ceremonies, etc. Approximately 10% of the position will focus on recruitment and retention events such as Open House, Pirates Aboard, new student orientations, and other college/university student recruitment events.
Minimum Education/Experience - A Master's degree is required. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation - None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education - Two or more years of experience in counseling, advising, and/or teaching is preferred. Also, prefer that the Bachelor's or Master's degree be in a liberal arts or sciences discipline. Strong advising, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Computer skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
