BUS ASSISTANT

SALARY

Classified Row 17 182 Day Contract

JOB GOAL

To assist in the safe transportation and supervision of students and support the efficient operation of the Transportation Department. Bus Assistants provide direct support to students during transportation, assist drivers in maintaining a safe environment, and perform assigned departmental duties during non-route hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Transportation and Safety

  • Assist the bus driver in the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of students.
  • Maintain supervision and control of students while riding the bus.
  • Ensure students are safely secured using appropriate restraints, seat belts, harnesses, wheelchair tie-downs, and other specialized equipment as required.
  • Assist students entering and exiting the bus, including students with disabilities and special needs.
  • Implement student-specific transportation plans, behavior plans, medical protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Monitor student behavior and intervene appropriately to maintain a safe transportation environment.
  • Document and report student incidents, concerns, and behavioral issues according to department procedures.
  • Assist with emergency evacuations, accidents, breakdowns, and medical emergencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, disabilities, medical information, and transportation needs.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, transportation staff, school personnel, and parents as directed.

Student Support

  • Provide support to students based on individual transportation needs.
  • Encourage student independence and appropriate behavior during transportation.
  • Assist students with transitions to and from school personnel, parents, or designated guardians.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries.

Transportation Department Support

During non-route hours, Bus Assistants may be assigned duties that support the operation of the Transportation Department, including:

  • Assisting with preparation and organization of student transportation records, route binders, and IEP transportation documentation.
  • Filing, copying, scanning, data entry, and other clerical support duties.
  • Assisting with inventory management, receiving deliveries, stocking supplies, and organizing storage areas.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of workrooms, work areas, supply rooms, and common areas.
  • Assisting with bus cleaning and preparation activities.
  • Supporting transportation projects, special assignments, and departmental initiatives.
  • Assisting with preparation of training materials and departmental communications.

Student Supervision

  • Assist with indoor and outdoor student supervision assignments as directed.
  • Promote a safe, orderly, and positive environment during assigned supervision duties.
  • Monitor student conduct and report concerns to the appropriate administrator.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
  • Maintain current certifications and complete all required district training.
  • Follow district policies, transportation procedures, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete assigned documentation in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate dependability, professionalism, teamwork, and flexibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and community members.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting.
  • Ability to assist students with mobility needs.
  • Ability to safely operate specialized transportation equipment.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform emergency evacuation procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works in a variety of environments including school buses, transportation facilities, school campuses, and outdoor settings. The position may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic conditions, noise, and frequent interaction with students. The employee may occasionally encounter disruptive or physically challenging student behaviors and must be able to respond appropriately and professionally.
