Job Title Coordinator for Special Education

Reports to Director of Special Education

Exemption Status: Exempt 226 days

Dept: School Special Populations

Salary calculations will be commensurate with job experience.

Primary Purpose: Lead coordinate and manage all assigned special education programs and services to ensure eligible students receive legally compliant high-quality and supports that promote academic and functional success.

Qualifications:

Education: Certification: Masters degree required Diagnostician or School Psychologist licensure required Texas Mid-management or other appropriate administrators certificate preferred Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of special education rules and regulations including dyslexia Knowledge of student assessment and evaluation for special education Knowledge of special education curriculum and programming Ability to monitor and evaluate program effectiveness Ability to facilitate and coordinate district-wide functions Ability to interpret policy procedures and data Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills Ability to produce quality reports within time constraints

Experience:

Prior experience working in or with special education required Experience in student assessment and evaluation required Special Education Classroom teaching experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Coordinate, facilitate, and manage all assigned areas in special education.
  2. Provide technical assistance to special education staff as needed.
  3. Provide technical assistance to campus administrators, faculty, and staff as needed (e.g. EB and CTE).
  4. Provide assistance to campuses regarding special education placements, programs, and scheduling, including working with counselors, transition specialists, and other necessary staff.
  5. Serve as the administrative representative for Admission Review and Dismissal committee meetings as needed.
  6. Facilitate continuous monitoring and improvement of assigned program areas.
  7. Assist in the development of forms, procedures, and operating guidelines for special education.
  8. Apply research and data to improve program effectiveness for assigned program areas.
  9. Collaboratively plan the necessary time, resources, and materials to accomplish the identified goals of assigned program areas.
  10. Promote and develop training, improvement opportunities to ensure exemplary operation of assigned program areas.
  11. Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs, helping campuses to pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  12. Ensure that program goals and objectives are developed using collaborative processes and problem-solving techniques when appropriate.

Student Management:

  1. Demonstrate support for the districts student management policies and expected student behavior related to all special program areas.
  2. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents, campus staff, and administration.

Policy Reports and Law:

  1. Work with all special education personnel to ensure accurate evaluation reports and special education documentation.
  2. Comply with the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in areas of responsibility.
  3. Assist with the collection, processing, and distribution of special education data and interpret this information for guidance, administrative, and instructional purposes.

Budget and Inventory:

  1. Assist in ensuring that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed prudently.
  2. Assist in compiling budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

Communication and Community Relations:

  1. Keep Director of Special Education informed regarding all assigned program areas.
  2. Work collaboratively with campus staff to promote effective communication regarding all assigned program areas.
  3. Work collaboratively with parents, caregivers, advocates, and community agencies.
  4. Articulate the districts mission and goals to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  5. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  6. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.

Mental Demands: Moderate standing, occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding, and use of mouse, occasional reaching Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying less than 15 pounds may lift and move books and classroom equipment

Environmental Factors: May work prolonged or irregular hours, occasional district-wide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, maintain attention to multiple projects simultaneously
