Job Title: Special Education Assistant

Primary Purpose:
Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help behavior management and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Experience
Prior experience working with children preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, classroom displays, and instructional activities.
- Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional activities and exercises as assigned by the teacher.
- Assist in the implementation of each students Individual Education Program as directed by the teacher.
- Assist with the administration and scoring of student assignments and tests.
- Assist in monitoring and supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including cafeteria, bus, or playground duty as assigned.
- Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
- Assist in inventory care and maintenance of supplies and materials.
- Assist the teacher in keeping records and preparing required reports.
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as appropriate.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Assist the teacher in the use of instructional technology for students.
- Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of students.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, board policy, and federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
