General Function:

Reports to the Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services and Innovation, manages school sites, and leads change initiatives to improve student achievement. The position provides supervisory leadership to Principals and staff that ensures school success and improves student achievement. This role supports site administrators in ensuring quality instruction at their sites, including but not limited to implementing high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), evaluating walk-through data to determine site professional development needs, and facilitating professional learning communities and professional learning. This position often represents the district in parent and community meetings, which occur in the evening.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: Master's degree in educational administration is required, as well as NM administrative licensure. 5+ years in progressively responsible educational leadership positions that include prior principalship and/or leadership in SPED or Curriculum & Instruction. Strong instructional skills required. Strong leadership skills needed to develop and achieve the academic goals of the district based upon the Board's Strategic Plan. Thorough knowledge of instructional theory and practice. Strong management and budgetary skills required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, public speaking skills, computer proficiency, and organizational skills required.

Preferred: Ph.D. in an education-related field. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred. Prior Central Office experience in a leadership role.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Ability to analyze classroom instruction and provide feedback for improvement to teachers and Principals. Knowledge of effective principles and practices of management. Knowledge of K-12 curriculum, school-centered decision-making. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, public groups/community, and the board of education. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, the school community, and public groups. Ability to speak clearly and concisely, both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Essential Job Functions:

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District. Current essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Evaluate and analyze instruction.
  • Mentors and coaches principals with feedback to increase and accelerate the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the instructional service delivery to increase student achievement across all student subgroups.
  • Coordinate and organize weekly walkthrough/instructional rounds visits.
  • Write walkthrough feedback to principals within 48 hours of each school visit.
  • Hold principals accountable for being in classrooms and observing instruction.
  • Work with parent complaints and return phone calls to parents in a timely manner.
  • Mediate issues with parents and principals.
  • Ensures that the needs of English Learners (ELs) and students with disabilities are met.
  • Attend community forums and evening events with the community and parents.
  • Attend and participate in Cabinet meetings.
  • Attend and participate in Instructional Council Meetings.
  • Facilitate data review meetings.
  • Assist Deputy Superintendent with teaching and learning standards.
  • Assist Deputy Superintendent with planning and organizing principal PD.
  • Assist Deputy Superintendent with union grievances.
  • Assist Deputy Superintendent with implementation of Common Core Standards.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Strategy and the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Systems.
  • Facilitates principal professional learning.
  • Participate in state and regional meetings.
  • Participates in the selection of new principals.
  • Works with Human Resources to resolve employee relations issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:

$ 135,000 - $ 145,000+ and Benefits

Resources Used in Performing the Job Include (but are not limited to):

Standard office equipment and vehicle for district travel. A district car may be available or, if the employee uses his/her own vehicle, mileage reimbursement is available.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to walk, talk, and listen. Frequently required to stand and sit. Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Light lifting at times.

Environmental Conditions:

Frequent travel between schools and offices. The noise level in this position varies. When visiting a building, the noise level may be loud; in the office, quiet, and at meetings, moderate. Heavy telephone contact and meeting schedule. Dealings with people may include individuals who are distraught, angry, or hostile.
