Bilingual Family Liaison

Primary Responsibilities:

The Bilingual Family Liaison serves as a vital community engagement specialist and a bridge between home and school to provide support services that impact students'' academic achievement and social-emotional well-being across the school division. The successful candidate will focus on identifying and removing barriers to learning, particularly those rooted in cultural, societal, economic, or familial factors. This role is essential in fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive school climate that promotes equity and graduation readiness for all students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Virginia teaching license with a School Social Worker or School Counselor endorsement
  • Bilingual Fluency: Demonstrated fluency in English and Spanish across all domains: speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Cultural Competence: Deep understanding of how family, culture, and socio-economic status affect student learning and growth
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Knowledge of school law, IDEA, Section 504, and WIDA English Language Development Standards
  • Ethics: Commitment to professional ethical standards, including maintaining confidentiality, upholding student well-being, and adhering to relevant district, state, and professional conduct guidelines
  • Have strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with parents and families

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in community outreach, bilingual family support, or working with diverse population in a K-12 setting

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Family Engagement & Outreach

  • Interpretation & Translation: Provide oral interpretation and written translation services in English and Spanish for meetings, conferences, and school communications
  • Registration & Enrollment Support: Assist newcomer families with the registration process, school tours, and navigating the school system
  • Parent Workshops: Organize and facilitate educational workshops and training opportunities for parents to support student success
  • Community Resource Coordination: Identify and mobilize community resources to assist families with essential needs such as health, wellness, and social services

Collaboration & Resource Coordination

  • Multidisciplinary Teams: Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Section 504 planning, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams
  • Community Liaison: Mobilize and coordinate community resources and refer families to external agencies for mental health, food, shelter, and medical care
  • Transportation Assistance: Assist in coordinating and, as necessary, providing transportation for families to access essential medical, mental health, or community appointments

Family & Systemic Engagement

  • Home-School Connection: Facilitate communication between families and school personnel, ensuring that parents/caregivers are supported in their child''s educational journey
  • Parent Education: Provide resources and education for parents on childhood development, specialized educational programs, and self-advocacy
  • Professional Development: Assist in training school staff on factors affecting student performance, such as trauma, cultural diversity, and social-emotional strategies
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Knowledge of school law, IDEA, Section 504, and WIDA English Language Development Standards
  • Ethics: Commitment to professional ethical standards, including maintaining confidentiality, upholding student well-being, and adhering to relevant district, state, and professional conduct guidelines

FLSA Status: Exempt

SALARY: $57,003.86 - $87,325.91 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience

Collective Bargaining - MCPS and MCEA have a collective bargaining agreement that establishes shared expectations and responsibilities, creates clear workday guidelines, protects professional time, and promotes fairness, teamwork, and respect. MCPS is currently the only school division in Southwest Virginia with a collective bargaining agreement.
