Special Education Life Skills Aide Budewig

Primary Purpose To assist teacher in the implementation of individualized education plans for students with disabilities.

Qualifications Education

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Eligible for appropriate paraprofessional certification

Major Responsibilities and Duties Program Management

  • Engage students in instructional activities under the direction of the teacher.
  • Help students master instructional materials assigned by teachers.
  • Perform clerical duties in support of the special education classroom, including: • Student attendance • Reproducing instructional materials • Creating bulletin boards and classroom displays • Cataloguing and filing instructional materials • Maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment • Preparing orders and requisitions for needed materials
  • Assist in the modification and adaptation of instructional materials.
  • Administer score and record achievement and diagnostic tests, objective-type teacher-made tests, and quizzes, and grades as the teacher recommends for students.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially taught by the teacher to promote communication, academic, behavioral, and functional achievement.
  • Collect and record data related to students IEP objectives and educational plans.

Classroom Support

  • Read to students
  • Listen to students read
  • Participate in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Operate equipment used in the classroom for instructional and functional purposes.
  • Assist students in the library or media center.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, play periods, and movement of groups to special classes.

Personal Care and Hygiene

  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of teachers.
  • Participate in training as assigned.
  • Provide explicit instruction to small groups of students using a lesson plan designed by the teacher.
  • Support classroom teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment and maintaining student discipline.
  • Perform the following personal hygiene functions when assigned per students needs: • Bathing • Cleaning clothes • Changing • Diapering • Feeding • Maintaining facial hair • Maintaining menstrual hygiene • Maintaining nasal hygiene • Toileting and/or toilet training

Physical and Behavioral Management

  • Perform the following physical behavior management procedures when assigned per students needs: • Administering therapeutic holds • Administering physical restraints • Monitoring scheduled reinforcement • Monitoring students who are in isolation • Escorting students with visual impairments • Orientation & Mobility • Transferring students in wheelchairs and/or other mobility devices

Specialized Services

  • Perform the following specialized services when assigned per students needs: • Transcribing Braille • Monitoring augmentative communication devices • Utilizing facilitated communication • Supervising students during community-based instruction
  • Demonstrate and maintain competence in delivering PCS in accordance with IEP requirements.
  • Perform PCS tasks as specified in each students IEP.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of all SHARS billable PCS activities.

Follow-up and Evaluation

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities None

Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of Instructional Paraprofessional Personnel.

Hiring Administrators Review Applications, Interview, and Recommend for Hire Calendar Days: 187 Pay Grade: ISP32025-2026 Salary Range:

  • Min. $25,627
  • Mid. $29,945
  • Max. $34,262 Based on previous experience Salaries are determined by the number of completed and eligible years of service at an accredited school. Salary is based on 187 days. If working less than 187 days, the salary will be less.
