PRESCHOOL INSTRUCTOR

7 hours per day (8:30 am - 4:00 pm) Monday-Friday

Start and end times are subject to variation based upon changing needs

(60 work days probation for new employees)

Purpose Statement:

An ECEAP Preschool Instructor is directly responsible for the care and education of children and must provide developmentally appropriate early childhood education and ensure a safe learning environment for all ECEAP hours.The ECEAP Preschool Instructor must demonstrate competency to observe and assess children's development; plan children's curriculum based on child development knowledge, design the learning environment, implement and supervise developmentally appropriate learning activities, build positive relationships with children, plan guidance strategies for children, involve parents while honoring differences.

This job reports to Director of Special Services/Building Administrator

Essential Functions

  • Plans, prepares and executes an enriching preschool and pre-K program for 3-5 year olds with structured and unstructured activities based on best practices.
  • Knowledge of the learning, growth and developmental process for children and developmentally appropriate curriculum using an integrated approach of cognitive, physical, social and emotional modalities.
  • Develops and incorporates curriculum based on the Washington State Early Learning Guidelines and district expectations.
  • Teaches and promotes the practice of life skills (e.g., self-care, serves nutritional snacks) and good habits for the purposes of improving the quality of student outcome and encouraging student development.
  • Maintains a well-managed classroom with minimal direction and age-appropriate behavior model.
  • Responsible for individual and groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of enforcing school rules and procedures and providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of documentation and/or communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Collects and compiles student data for evaluations and assessments.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, school staff and supervisor including responding to inquiries from staff (e.g., administrators, psychologists, teachers) for the purpose of information.
  • Coordinates and facilitates Parent-Teacher Conferences twice annually.
  • Schedules and facilitates WA Kids Conferences for new families.
  • Collaborates with kindergarten teachers through Professional Learning Communities (PLC) as scheduled.
  • Collaborates with Special Services in the implementation of the inclusion preschool model for identified students as needed.
  • Performs recordkeeping and clerical functions (e.g., copying and collecting/distributing supplies).
  • Maintains classroom materials and equipment, work area, (e.g., adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, audio visual equipment, etc.)
  • Has the ability to work with computers and related curriculum enhancing tools.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Attends Professional Development workshops as assigned to assist with the incorporation of new strategies, techniques and curriculum.
  • Attends monthly preschool PLC meetings as scheduled.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and understand complex multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation; direct instruction/reading instruction; stages of child development and learning styles; and age-appropriate activities.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions.

Experience

Job related experience preferred

Education: One of the following

  • AA or higher in ECE
  • AA degree or higher with 30 ECE credits (recognized by DCYF)
  • AA degree or higher + DCYF approved Montessori credential
  • Approved Professional Development Plan to meet these requirements within 5 years

Valid First Aid Certificate - adult/pediatric
