JOB SUMMARY

This 12-month faulty position (229 days/year) serves as the program lead and clinical coordinator. Faculty at KCC are expected to provide high-quality, outcomes-based instruction that aligns with the philosophy and objectives of the college. In addition to teaching, faculty participate in college activities, committees, and other duties to support the mission and initiatives of the college.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Lead:

  • Develop AAS-Surgical technician curriculum and degree in alignment with ARC/STSA standards.
  • Teach 45-60 credits across four terms in a variety of modalities
  • Obtain CAAHEP accreditation candidacy status, and HECC approval to offer a surgical technician AAS degree granting program.
  • Recommend and procure supplies, equipment and technology required for AAS degree program.
  • Collaborate with clinical partners in ensuring space allocation for laboratory instruction at the college or clinical site.
  • Develop admissions processes and selection criteria, as needed.
  • Apply the standards and follow the guidelines set by the ARC/STSA for continued program accreditation and student success. Participate in ARC/STSA sponsored accreditation workshop at least once every five years. (Newly appointed program directors must participate in an ARC/STSA sponsored Accreditation Fundamentals for Educators workshop within one year of their appointment).
  • Pursue formal training designed to maintain and upgrade professional, instructional and administrative capabilities.

Clinical Coordination:

  • Responsible for the planning, development, and general effectiveness of clinical learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with community health care facilities for clinical placements where the students can practice their skills and apply learned knowledge.
  • Collaborate with college personnel and clinical sites to initiate and maintain clinical affiliation agreements.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the clinical experiences and facility.
  • Coordinate the placements of students and clinical instructors for clinical rotations.

Instructor:

  • Help advance the role and goals of a comprehensive community college.
  • Teach a range of surgical technology courses, labs and clinical rotations.
  • Assist in recruitment and scheduling of qualified adjunct faculty to assist with instruction, as needed.
  • Create a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from other departments and divisions to promote communication, coordinate programs, and support student success.
  • Prepare clear learning outcomes for each course and inform students of learning outcomes in a course syllabus.
  • Participate in college service and activities outside direct instruction, such as registration, curriculum development, advising, strategic planning, and educational assessment.
  • Support student recruitment, placement, and retention.
  • Post and keep office hours to be available to students for assistance outside the classroom.
  • Teach at least one evening section per year as needed.
  • Keep professionally current by participating in professional development and other activities; maintain current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation (NBSTSA CST certification, AST membership).
  • Maintain active liaison with high schools, universities, business and industry or external agencies and assist the dean with program advisory board committees as appropriate.
  • Complete instructional duties, reports, and paper work assigned by the dean in a timely manner.
  • Attend division, department, and committee meetings and in-service programs.
  • Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning, laboratory and office environments.
  • Maintain and emphasize safe working conditions and practices.
  • Comply with all Board policies and administrative regulations.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update program instruments and supplement and coordinate the ordering and distribution with vendors.

NON-ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • If assigned, this position may require administrative work on grant-funded program activities and reporting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to stand or remain upright for extended periods in instructional and clinical settings.
  • Ability to speak clearly and project voice in a standard classroom and surgical lab for 2 hours.
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve clinical and lab issues.
  • Ability to maintain calm instructional atmosphere with students.
  • Ability to focus on task despite numerous daily interruptions to routine.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology, software, and hardware.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain familiarity with regional clinical sites.
  • Must meet all required immunizations
  • Work daily in the classroom, OR lab, and clinical perioperative sites.
  • Instruction and office hours generally occur during daytime hours, varied from 6:00AM to 5:00PM but occasional meetings, advising, and other obligations may require coordinator to attend more hours during the evening, weekends, and non-scheduled days.
  • Labs and clinicals potentially involve the use of some hazardous wastes which require the use of standard precautions including proper PPE at all times, as well as observing all state and Federal OSHA regulations.

  • Full-time faculty collaborate regularly on curriculum, maintenance, implementation, and changes in schedule and clinical sites.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ability to travel between campus and assigned clinical sites as required.
  • Education Required: Associate's Degree or greater AND be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency; possess a CST credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Experience Required: Minimum of five years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the last 10 years. Must possess a current CPR certification. Have documented education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design and program planning
  • Education and/or Experience Preferred: B.S. or Master's in Education or a Health-related field. Possess proficiency in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.
