POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: School Counselor .6 Berkeley Springs High School/ .4 Pleasant View Elementary School

FLSA: Exempt Professional

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree In School Counseling Preferred.
  • School Counseling experience preferred.
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience
  • Demonstrated success in mediation & relationship building.
  • Knowledge of the West Virginia School Counseling model.
  • Professional Student Support Certificate endorsed for School Counselor
  • Knowledge and experience working with WVEIS

REPORTS TO: Principal

SALARY: Salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.

OVERVIEW: The school guidance program assists students in becoming responsible adults. Career plans are developed, reviewed, and updated periodically in accordance with students' post graduation educational and occupational goals. Continuous attention is given to assisting students to develop competence in decision-making, career planning, working with others, and taking responsibility for their own behavior.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator
  • Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery 0f the school counseling program based in WV.
  • Communicates the goals of the school counseling program to educate stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community business leaders.
  • Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders.
  • Uses data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs.
  • Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide counseling program.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Incorporates into their programs the life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century.
  • Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
  • Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
  • Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational community resources regarding students with individual concerns and needs.
  • Implements and effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
  • Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Provides appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed.
  • Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized tests scores for students and parents.
  • Facilitate informational evening sessions for parents regarding financial aid, Advanced Placement coursework, and college night.
  • Attend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload.
  • Conducts a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness. Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Measures results of comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
  • Duties as assigned by building principal/supervisor.
