Description

Duties:

  • Support laboratory experiments by developing, building, and maintaining custom automation systems and 3D-printed components.
  • Operate and maintain FDM and resin 3D printers, including slicing, calibration, troubleshooting, and post-processing of printed parts.
  • Design and fabricate custom fixtures, enclosures, and mechanical components using CAD software (e.g., Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or OnShape).
  • Assist researchers in integrating microcontrollers (Arduino, R aspberry Pi, ESP32) and basic sensors/actuators into experimental setups.
  • Document designs, build processes, and standard operating procedures for lab equipment and automation workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers to translate experimental requirements into working hardware solutions.
  • Maintain inventory of 3D printing materials, electronic components, and lab supplies.
  • Keep lab equipment in working order, perform routine maintenance, and recommend repairs or upgrades as needed.
  • Follow lab safety protocols and help ensure a safe, organized workspace.
  • Train lab members on basic use of 3D printers and automation tools as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree (or in progress) in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing (FDM and/or resin), including basic troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with at least one CAD package for parametric modeling.
  • Basic programming experience (Python, C/C++, or equivalent) for microcontroller or automation scripting.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and communicate clearly with researchers.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience designing custom laboratory automation systems (e.g., motorized stages, liquid handling, sensor integration).
  • Familiarity with electronics prototyping, soldering, PCB design, or wiring of motors, relays, and sensors.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and technical documentation.
  • Prior work in a research lab environment.
