Job Description

SUMMARY

The Director for Instruction provides leadership, support, and supervision for assigned schools to ensure high levels of student achievement and successful implementation of the district's strategic plan. The Director works collaboratively with principals, instructional coaches, counselors, and district leaders to strengthen instructional practices, implement Multi-Layered Systems of Support (MLSS), improve student outcomes, expand college and career readiness opportunities as appropriate, and ensure equitable access to high-quality learning experiences for all students.

The Director for Instruction is responsible for monitoring school performance, developing principal leadership capacity, supporting continuous improvement efforts, strengthening student success systems, and ensuring consistent implementation of district instructional frameworks, intervention systems, and student support structures across assigned schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Complies with the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession; upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives, regulations, GISD school board policies, as well as local, state and federal regulations.

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and computer security regulations.

Supervises, monitors, and evaluates assigned personnel for effectiveness in the development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, intervention systems, and student support programs.

Leads district efforts to improve student achievement across assigned schools through implementation of high-quality instructional practices aligned to district strategic goals.

Supports principals in achieving district performance targets related to student achievement, graduation outcomes, attendance, college readiness, career readiness, and other district performance measures as applicable.

Provides leadership that ensures quality instructional programs, curriculum implementation, and instructional delivery aligned to district expectations and state standards.

Supports implementation of Multi-Layered Systems of Support (MLSS), including Layer 2 and Layer 3 intervention systems, Student Assistance Team (SAT) processes, progress monitoring practices and student support structures.

Monitors implementation of Math Labs and intervention systems across assigned schools to ensure consistency, effectiveness, and fidelity to district expectations as appropriate.

Conducts regular school visits, classroom walkthroughs, and instructional reviews to monitor implementation of district instructional priorities and provide feedback to principals.

Collaborate with instructional coaches, counselors, principals, and district leaders to strengthen data-driven instruction, professional learning communities (PLCs), intervention systems, and continuous improvement practices.

Utilizes formative and summative assessment data to guide curriculum development, intervention planning, extended learning opportunities, and school improvement efforts.

Monitors student achievement, attendance, behavior, graduation rates, course performance, college readiness indicators, career readiness indicators, and school climate data to identify trends and support school improvement planning.

Supports implementation of bilingual education, multilingual learner supports, special education services, gifted education programs, and other specialized instructional programs at assigned campuses.

Advocates for programs that meet the needs of at-risk student populations and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities.

Establishes an environment that empowers principals to execute their responsibilities as instructional leaders and promotes innovation in the pursuit of student achievement.

Promotes an organizational climate that fosters positive staff morale, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Collaborates with district leaders to ensure PreK-12 alignment of curriculum, instruction, intervention systems, and student support services.

Provides guidance, support, supervision, and evaluation for assigned instructional coaches, instructional specialists, counselors, and other instructional support personnel.

Coordinates efforts and provides leadership to school counseling programs to ensure alignment with district goals related to student success, graduation, postsecondary readiness, and college and career readiness as appropriate for assigned schools.

Ensures integration and effective use of technology to support teaching, learning, intervention, communication, and student success initiatives.

Serves as the district liaison with higher education institutions, dual credit partners, and community organizations as assigned.

Supports district efforts to expand postsecondary opportunities through dual credit, advanced coursework, industry certifications, career pathways, and workforce readiness initiatives.

Monitors implementation of district college and career readiness goals and ensures alignment between instructional programming and workforce demands.

Supports implementation and monitoring of grants, initiatives, and programs assigned by the Chief Academic Officer.

Assists schools in implementing district intervention strategies, attendance improvement efforts, dropout prevention initiatives, and district credit recovery initiatives as appropriate.

Arranges and coordinates district-level principal and school leadership meetings focused on instructional leadership, student outcomes, strategic plan implementation, and organizational effectiveness.

Assists schools in implementing federal, state, and district academic initiatives.

Visits assigned schools frequently to ensure effective communication with principals and school leadership teams.

Confers regularly with the Chief Academic Officer regarding school performance, instructional priorities, emerging needs, and recommended actions to improve student outcomes.

Uses school performance data and implementation evidence to monitor progress toward district strategic goals and recommend adjustments as needed.

Monitors school improvement planning processes, accountability measures, and continuous improvement efforts across assigned schools.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assigned instructional specialists, instructional coaches, counselors, college and career readiness personnel, and other assigned personnel.

Provides coaching, support, supervision, and evaluation for instructional leaders and support personnel to ensure implementation of district instructional priorities, student support systems, and continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • New Mexico Level 3B Administrative License or equivalent

  • Valid New Mexico Teaching License
