Join our Team! Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in the future of national security? The Experimental Device Engineering and Assembly Group (V-5) is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the V-5 Weapons Parts Team. V-5 is Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) premier engineering organization focused on expert assembly of experimental weapon test devices. We integrate a team of highly motivated specialized engineers, technicians, weapon parts custodians and shipping specialists with world-class capabilities in hazardous materials handling, hazardous material shipping, and experimental device assembly to include high-explosives and accountable materials to safely and securely deliver high-quality assemblies meeting customer requirements. V-5's mission is focused on supporting the Weapons Program experimental assembly portfolio (B61, W76, W78, W88, W93, Global Security, etc.) for the LANL's Stockpile Stewardship mission, as well as other HE experimental programs at LANL, LLNL, and others. The successful candidate will be mentored and will assist senior personnel to package, schedule, and transport classified parts, high explosives, hazardous materials, and test assemblies. After a period of training and observation, the selected candidate will develop professional expertise to become a qualified HE handler and CDL driver with hazmat endorsement. The successful candidate will be expected to qualify for and participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Developing knowledge and skills working with any or all the following: Nuclear Material, Explosives, Radiological Material, other Hazardous Material, and/or Classified Parts.
  • Developing knowledge or skills with coordination, packaging, transportation, and storage of hazardous items.
  • Developing knowledge to contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the storage and transportation of Explosives, other Hazardous Material, and/or Classified Parts.
  • Some working knowledge of safety and security compliance, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Some experience supporting customers utilizing written and oral communication skills utilizing tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail.
  • Some experience fostering a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
Training/Certifications: Applicants must demonstrate a willingness to participate in on-the-job (OJT) training, the human reliability program (HRP), and other training tasks as required as listed in the Desired Qualifications section.

Education/Experience: Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Hands-on experience with LANL Footprints, PDMLink, and CPIMS/CITRAS.
  • High Explosives Handler Qualification
  • Working knowledge of P101-8, Explosives Safety, and the controlling document, DOE Standard 1212.2012 (Formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual)
  • Forklift license
  • HMPT Training (Hazardous Material Packaging and/or classified packaging and Transportation)
  • Experience in high-hazard operations (HE/Rad).
  • Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat endorsement
  • Rad Worker II certification

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
