Vice President of Finance

Location & Work Model: New Haven County - Hybrid

Compensation: $150,000-$165,000+ depending on experience

Position Summary

The Vice President of Finance serves as the fiscal leader of the organization and a key advisor to the Executive Director and leadership team. This role oversees the Finance Office and is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong fiscal controls, and effective financial planning.

The Vice President of Finance manages financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, funder reporting, and risk management. This position plays a critical role in maintaining strong relationships with funding partners and financial institutions while ensuring the organization remains financially sustainable and well-positioned for future growth.

The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership experience, the ability to manage multiple funding streams and complex revenue sources, and the ability to translate financial data into clear insights that support organizational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities, VP of Finance

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Serve as a financial advisor to the Executive Director and leadership team to support strategic planning and organizational decision-making
  • Provide financial insights and analysis to guide long-term financial strategy
  • Present financial reports to leadership, funders, and the Board

Financial Operations & Reporting

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations of the organization
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, payments, and collections
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis in collaboration with program leadership
  • Monitor cash flow and manage financial resources effectively, including responsible use of debt where appropriate

Revenue & Grant Management

  • Oversee financial management of state, federal, and local grants and contracts
  • Collaborate with program leadership on monthly, quarterly, and annual contract fiscal reporting
  • Monitor multiple revenue streams to ensure proper allocation and compliance with funding requirements

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance Office team (3–4 staff members)
  • Establish effective workflows and internal controls to ensure efficiency and accuracy
  • Provide training and oversight to ensure strong financial operations

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal control standards
  • Oversee annual audit and tax reporting processes
  • Manage banking relationships and insurance renewals
  • Establish and maintain fiscal policies and procedures

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and enhance financial systems and reporting processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial operations and internal controls

Qualifications for the VP of Finance Position

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA, MBA, or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 7–10 years of progressive finance leadership experience
  • Experience managing multiple funding streams and complex financial structures
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising and developing staff
  • Knowledge of GAAP and internal control practices

Preferred

  • Experience in nonprofit financial management, including management of government contracts and grants
  • Experience with MIP accounting software
