This program is designed to train and develop skilled surgical technologists who will play a crucial role in supporting surgical teams and ensuring optimal patient outcomes. Ascension's Center for Career Advancement proudly presents the Vocare Surgical Technologist Program, an exceptional career development opportunity for current associates. As a key offering within the broader Vocare Tuition Program and its Vocare Clinical Programs, this training program is designed for highly motivated individuals eager to become skilled Surgical Technologists. Participants will receive comprehensive, hands-on training and theoretical knowledge, preparing them to play a crucial role in supporting surgical teams and ensuring optimal patient outcomes within our facilities.

Program Eligibility:

  • Must have a High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have BLS certification
  • Must be a current Ascension associate in a part time or full time benefit eligibility status 
  • Must not be on a final step of corrective action
  • Must not be a participant in the Vocare Tuition Program Get Reimbursed or We Pay option in the 2026 calendar year. 
  • Must be within 30 minutes of the participating site for on-call shift requirements by program completion

 

Program Overview:

The Surgical Technologist Program duration is approximately 11- 12 months and will consist of:

 

  • Didactic (Online Courses): All coursework is online and will be completed outside of associates’ working hours.  The initial didactic phase covering the first 3 courses, runs from June 8, 2026 to November 11, 2026Associates and will remain in their current role during this phase.
  •  Skills Lab Training: Beginning November 9, 2026  associates  will transfer into a Vocare Clinical Program intern role at the beginning of the online course Surgical Tech I, aligning with the hands-on skills lab training. This phase will involve practice with surgical instruments, sterile techniques, and simulated surgical scenarios and last approximately 10 weeks. 
  • Clinical Rotations: Supervised experience requiring associates to complete approximately 400 hours or 125 cases in various surgical specialties within approved healthcare facilities.
  • Preceptorship: Associates will receive guidance from experienced surgical technologists and healthcare professionals.


Overview of the Vocare Clinical Intern Role (Effective upon transition to Skills Lab Training):
This section details the associate’s schedule and responsibilities during the Vocare Clinical Program intern phase, following the transition on November 9, 2026. 

  • Schedule: 40 hour work week
  • 2 days of each week will be dedicated to hands-on skills lab training 
  • 3 days each week will provide productive support in the clinical environment as directed by the Clinical Leader.

  • Enrollment with Ascension & the academic partner, beginning April 10th through May 29th
  • Start date of program on June 8th

 

Additional Preferences

  • At least 6 months experience working in a clinical environment
  • Strong interest in healthcare and surgical procedures.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.

How you'll make an impact in this role:

Under the direct supervision of a preceptor and/or clinical faculty, observe and provide services within scope of practice to patients in an assigned area.

  • Adhere to the policies, procedures, and guidelines set forth by the hospital and academic institution during the clinical rotation period.
  • Ensure timely submission of required documentation, including consent forms, immunization records, and any other necessary paperwork.
  • Participate in the care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by the student's program discipline.
  • Participate in and/or observe procedures which are specified by each academic program.
  • Participate in appropriate institutional committees affecting the student's education and/or patient care experience.
What minimum qualifications you'll need:

Education: 

  • Enrollment in an accredited academic program leading to a degree or certification in a healthcare-related field preferred.

Experience:

  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in a dynamic healthcare environment preferred.
  • Understanding of and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy preferred.
