Job Description

The Department of Art & Design at the University of Indianapolis seeks applicants for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for Ceramics. Ceramics is part of a liberal arts Studio Art program in the Department of Art & Design, alongside BS degree programs in Graphic Design, Illustration, Pre-Art Therapy, and Arts Education. All programs offer a multidisciplinary approach and a breadth of experiences that help students build a portfolio.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate ceramics courses within the
NASAD-accredited Bachelor of Science degree program. Qualified candidates must be able to teach all aspects of Ceramics, including but not limited to hand-building and throwing on the Wheel for functional and sculptural works. The candidate must also be able to build and maintain kilns and pottery equipment; understand clay and glaze chemistry; be knowledgeable about stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware; and be familiar with both oxidation and reduction firing. This position includes managing and operating the Ceramics studio and overseeing open studio hours.
The University of Indianapolis is a teaching-centered institution that also values service to its departments, colleges, and the university. Service in the department includes, but is not limited to, student advising, portfolio reviews, studio management, department events and exhibitions, and related activities. This position would additionally oversee the physical management of the Dee Schaad Student Gallery, located in the same building as the Ceramics studio. Ideal candidates will value collaboration and work well with faculty from a range of disciplines. An MFA in Ceramics is required. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate professional experience in ceramics, prior studio management, and university-level teaching.
