Position Overview
The Senior Engineering Technician functions as a technical design specialist and senior-level contributor within a specific engineering discipline, with a strong emphasis on substation design. This role applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges, develops high-quality engineering deliverables, and supports the implementation of innovative engineering solutions.
In addition to hands-on design responsibilities, the role provides technical guidance, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to project standards, schedules, and budgets.
Key Responsibilities
- Function as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or lead within the design group.
- Apply advanced technical knowledge to resolve complex design and engineering challenges within substation projects.
- Utilize digital design tools and software (including Bentley MicroStation 3D and/or AutoCAD 3D) to create, modify, and maintain engineering drawings, models, and project deliverables.
- Establish, communicate, and help enforce appropriate design, drafting, and graphic standards.
- Review project requirements and accurately determine the format, content, and scope of required deliverables.
- Promote quality within the project, group, or section by reviewing design inputs and ensuring consistency across deliverables.
- Ensure all deliverables comply with applicable project codes, standards, and specifications.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and procedures.
- Participate in and may lead process improvement initiatives and change management efforts.
- Maintain drawing control and historical project records in accordance with established project procedures.
- Perform design calculations, detailed material quantity take-offs, estimates, and technical documentation.
- Review and verify the work of other designers and technicians for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
- Coordinate production design activities, delegate work assignments, and monitor progress to maintain schedule and budget compliance.
- Collaborate with other design disciplines to exchange technical information and support design development.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineering technicians.
- Communicate project design requirements, progress updates, and schedules to internal teams.
- Support field activities and plant start-up efforts as required within the area of expertise.
- Assist discipline or department leadership with design standard development, training needs, and process improvements.
- Identify training and development needs for supervised staff and participate in training delivery.
- May be assigned specialized technical tasks or serve on focused design teams to resolve unique or complex design challenges.
- Deliver technical presentations and conduct training sessions within areas of recognized expertise.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 11 years of experience as an engineering technician or design specialist, preferably in substation or power-related projects.
- Proven experience with Bentley MicroStation 3D and/or AutoCAD 3D substation design.
- Strong understanding of engineering design standards, codes, and best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex technical assignments independently.
- Experience reviewing, coordinating, and overseeing design deliverables.
- Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineering professionals.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with project teams and clients.
- Must live within 50 miles of a BV office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recognized technical expertise in one or more specialized engineering or substation design areas.
- Experience supporting field activities and start-up or commissioning efforts.
- Prior experience in process improvement or design standard development initiatives.
