Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate and culturally aware patient care. Demonstrates knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Maintains an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Fulfills other duties as assigned, including assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking surgical areas. Ensures compliance with relevant standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Possesses knowledge, skill, and ability related to procedures being performed. Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, reviews and utilizes appropriate preference cards. Assists with room set-up, including opening sterile supplies. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, and medications needed for procedures in an accurate and timely manner. Performs appropriate surgical counts with the circulator. Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves for the surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure and maintains an organized back table and operative field. Anticipates and offers suggestions to the surgeon during the procedure. Maintains the highest standards of sterile technique. Prepares sterile dressings and participates in accounting for specimens post-procedure. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Applies principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure safety. Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards. Observes patients' conditions and reports changes to the physician and registered nurse. Plans proactively for the next steps in the procedure as needed. Prepares the operating room and other areas for receiving patients. Maintains financial stewardship regarding supplies and equipment. Provides culturally aware patient care consistent with population-specific characteristics. Verifies procedures and conducts bedside shift reports with patients. Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments. Completes all required training, competencies, and education. Participates in training related to new policies, processes, or equipment. Serves as a resource for new technology or procedures introduced. Maintains continuing education related to the field per evaluation period. Maintains organization and cleanliness of the surgical area. Completes other duties as assigned. Ensures compliance with all organizational policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
