Job Title: Certified Surgical First Assist Profession: Certified Surgical First Assist Specialty: Operating Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 10:30 AM - 11:00 PM Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 5+ Years of Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) Experience License: Active Certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) Certifications: Active American Heart Association BLS Must-Have: - Work History - Skills Checklist, current to 1 year, pertinent to the specialty (Certified Surgical First Assist) - 2 Supervisory Reference Forms Completed within the last two years Description: This position prepares the surgical suite for the procedure by assisting the surgical technologist along with the registered nurse. The assistant is responsible for gathering equipment, instruments, and supplies to perform the procedure. All supplies and equipment must be available for the procedure and in working condition. The position requires assisting the surgeon in patient care while in the operating room. Key responsibilities include providing exposure, aiding in hemostasis, and closure. Other intraoperative technical functions will support the surgeon in carrying out safe operations for optimal patient outcomes. Proper draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, suturing, tissue handling, and cautery techniques are essential. The assistant is also responsible for applying appropriate dressing materials specific to the procedure. Collaboration with the operating room team is crucial for effective patient care. Demonstrating knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedures is required. Assuring all necessary supplies, equipment, and instruments are available is essential. Confirmation with the nurse and surgical technologist helps ensure items are charged appropriately. The assistant must assist the physician with positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, cautery techniques, stapling devices, and suturing. Supporting team members in the transportation, positioning, and overall care of patients is also a responsibility.
