The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, high-level disinfection (HLD), assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. These functions are done by state-of-the-art decontamination, HLD, and sterilization equipment. Instruments, trays, and pans are tracked by a bar code system. Responsibilities include inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrument pans and procedural trays. The role involves selecting methods of packaging and sterilization, consulting with the Processing Manager as needed, and examining surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function. Assembling instrument sets according to established protocols is essential. Handling instruments appropriately ensures successful sterilization. Completing count/supply sheets to document the contents of trays is required. Established procedures for packaging/wrapping trays/instruments must be followed to guarantee sterilization. This role involves operating steam sterilizers per established procedures. Checking time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently ensures proper levels are maintained. Loading and unloading sterilizers and placing items on shelves for distribution are necessary tasks. Simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets, is part of the role. Assuring sterility is achieved by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting results, and completing required documentation. The role requires checking and adjusting medical equipment per specific procedures. Instruments and equipment must operate according to specifications before issuance. Sending equipment not meeting specifications to the appropriate area for repair is essential. Decontaminating surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures is required. Preventing cross-contamination according to established procedures is important. Setting up decontamination equipment for operation, cleaning, and disinfecting equipment and work areas upon completion of shifts is necessary. Handling infectious waste and linen according to established protocol ensures compliance with department, legal, and regulatory standards. Receiving and storing supplies from vendors and checking stock upon receipt are part of the responsibilities. Documenting stock received and reporting discrepancies is essential. Assisting in maintaining par levels of inventory is required. Documenting and filling orders for supplies for patient care areas, as well as delivering supplies when warranted, is expected. Maintaining records of equipment inventory use and referring equipment not meeting specifications for repair is necessary. This position requires responsibility for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments. Daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts are expected. Critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets is required.
