Job Title: Allied Sterile Processing Tech Profession: Sterile Processing Technician Specialty: Sterile Processing Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evenings Hours per Shift: 8.0 Experience: Minimum of 3 years License: Certified Sterile Processor Certifications: BLS Must-Have: - Certified Sterile Processor (HSPA or CBSPD) - BLS - Minimum of 3 years of experience as Sterile Processing Technician - Large hospital experience (500 beds or more) - Travel experience (6 months) - Two professional references from the last two experiences Description: The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility. The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, high-level disinfection, assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. These functions are performed using advanced decontamination and sterilization equipment. Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed to multiple operating room suites, units, and clinics. These items are tracked by a bar code system. Responsibilities include: Inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts. Selecting the method of packaging and sterilization while consulting with the Processing Manager as needed. Examining surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function. Assembling instrument sets to ensure the appropriate number and type of instrument per software program protocols. Handling instruments appropriately to ensure effective sterilization. Completing count/supply sheets to document the contents of trays. Following established procedures to package and wrap trays and instruments to guarantee sterilization. Operating steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures. Checking time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently to maintain proper levels. Loading and unloading sterilizers and placing items on shelves for distribution. Performing simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets. Ensuring sterility is achieved by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting the results, and completing required documentation. Checking and adjusting medical equipment according to specific procedures to ensure instruments and equipment operate according to specifications prior to issuing. Sending all equipment not meeting specifications to the appropriate area for repair. Decontaminating surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures and preventing cross-contamination. Setting up decontamination equipment for operation and cleaning and disinfecting equipment and the work area upon completion of the shift. Handling infectious waste and linen according to established protocol to ensure continuous workflow and compliance with department, legal, and regulatory standards. Receiving and storing supplies from outside vendors and hospital areas. Checking stock as it is received against requisitions and documenting stock received while reporting discrepancies. Assisting in maintaining par levels of inventory. Documenting and filling orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and delivering supplies when warranted. Maintaining records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment not meeting specifications that are referred for repair. Responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments. Performing daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts. Responsible for critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets.
