Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions. Knowledge of human behavior and performance, including individual differences in ability, personality, and interests. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Description: Under the supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Director, the Staff Therapist is accountable for administering Physical Therapy to patients from pediatric to geriatric. The goal of therapy is to improve the patient's functional ability. The therapist meets the patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results. They determine physical therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription. The therapist helps patients accomplish treatment plans and accept therapeutic devices by administering manual exercises. They instruct, encourage, and assist patients in performing physical activities, including non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily-living activities. The therapist also assists patients in using assistive and supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, and prostheses. Physical therapy treatments are administered by giving massages and initiating traction. They apply physical agents and utilize hydrotherapy tanks, whirlpool baths, moist packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines. The therapist directs treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants. They evaluate the effects of physical therapy treatments and the fit of prosthetic and orthotic devices by observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress. Recommendations for adjustments and modifications are made based on evaluations. The therapist participates in discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare workers. They contribute to patient care conferences. To ensure continuity of the therapeutic plan following discharge, the therapist designs home exercise programs. Patients, families, and caregivers are instructed in home exercise programs. The therapist recommends and/or provides assistive equipment and outpatient or home health follow-up programs. Patient care services are documented by charting in patient and department records. Maintaining patient confidence and protecting hospital operations by keeping information confidential is essential for the therapist. The therapist maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. They protect patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols. Equipment operation is ensured by completing preventive maintenance requirements and following manufacturer's instructions. The therapist troubleshoots malfunctions and calls for repairs when necessary. Professional and technical knowledge is maintained by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications. Establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies are important for development. The therapist contributes to the development of physical therapy staff by providing information and conducting in-service training programs. They comply with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation. The therapist anticipates future legislation and enforces adherence to requirements. Advising management on needed actions is part of the role. They contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related results as needed.
