This school-based travel Physical Therapist position is located in Ithaca, New York, a vibrant small city in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Ithaca is known for its stunning gorges and waterfalls, easy access to hiking and outdoor recreation, a lively arts and music scene, and a strong culture of education and innovation. The community offers a welcoming, intellectually curious atmosphere with a mix of students, professionals, and families, making it an appealing location for clinicians who value both natural beauty and a dynamic town center. In this role, you will provide direct Physical Therapy services to students in grades K-12 within a public school district. Your primary responsibility will be to support students’ access to the educational environment through individualized PT interventions based on IEPs. You will work as a key member of the special education team, helping students build functional mobility, balance, and motor skills needed for participation in school routines and activities. Core responsibilities include: Direct PT services for K-12 students in accordance with IEP goals and service mandates Evaluation of students’ functional mobility, posture, balance, and gross motor skills within school environments such as classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and cafeterias Development of individualized treatment plans, interventions, and school-based accommodations to promote student participation and safety Attendance and active participation in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings as the PT representative, providing professional input on student needs, goals, and progress Preparation of clear, comprehensive written reports, including evaluations, progress updates, and documentation to support IEP development and compliance Collaboration with teachers, related service providers, and families to integrate PT strategies into daily routines and classroom activities Recommendations for and training on adaptive equipment, positioning devices, mobility aids, and environmental modifications as needed Travel to multiple school buildings during the workday to provide services across the district, with scheduling support from school and special education staff Maintenance of accurate and timely documentation according to district and state regulations A typical day may include scheduled PT sessions across several school sites, consultation with teachers about classroom modifications, participation in one or more CSE meetings, and completion of documentation and progress notes. Caseload and student needs will vary by building and age group, providing exposure to a wide spectrum of pediatric conditions and functional levels. This variety offers valuable experience for physical therapists looking to deepen their skills in school-based practice and pediatric rehabilitation. The district is situated in a community that values education, inclusion, and student support. You can expect to work in a collaborative environment with dedicated teachers, school psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, counselors, and administrators. The team-oriented culture supports shared problem-solving and creative approaches to meeting student needs. This is an excellent opportunity for a travel PT to build strong school-based experience, strengthen skills in IEP-driven care and interprofessional collaboration, and make a meaningful impact on children and adolescents over the course of the school year. The schedule is a school-based day shift aligned with student hours, with approximately 35 expected hours per week. While the specific school calendar dates are not detailed in this posting, you will follow the district’s academic calendar, which includes standard school breaks and holidays. This assignment offers a strong professional development experience for a Physical Therapist interested in pediatrics, education-based practice, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
