The unit aims for nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4 but may operate at a 1:5 ratio, occasionally reaching 1:6. Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts. Each charge nurse has support from a Clinical Assistant who works two, 12-hour shifts and two, 8-hour shifts in the office. Typically, there are 2-3 nurse aides on duty, with a patient ratio of 1:10-12. Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, requiring staff to work four weekend shifts per four-week schedule. Staff who work mainly day shifts must work at least three night shifts within the four-week period. Nurses are expected to be flexible regarding holiday shifts, although they are primarily covered by permanent staff. Registered Nurses must wear navy blue scrubs and jackets, with a prohibition on hoodies. Telemetry is monitored by technicians, but nurses must be able to read and interpret their own strips as needed. All respiratory equipment is managed by respiratory therapy staff. Nursing staff can expect a hospitalist in-house 24/7 and an intensivist in the ICU to provide continuous support. An in-house IV team is available 24/7, responsible for IV starts and access placement. Pharmacy services are available around the clock. Shifts begin promptly at 6:45 AM or PM, and self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met. Nurses are required to float to other areas as necessary while maintaining safe patient ratios. The first day of work includes an introduction with human resources, followed by two days of on-unit training with a preceptor. Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, post-pacer care, and pre/post catheterization management. Staff are expected to adhere to strict attendance policies related to shift coverage. Charting is completed using the designated electronic medical record system.
