Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 Years PCU RN Experience License: Required License Certifications: NIHSS, BLS, and ACLS Certification Required Must-Have: CCRN Preferred Description: This position is for a registered nurse in a progressive care unit. The facility has 637 licensed beds and is designated as a Level 1 Trauma center. It serves as a teaching hospital and is recognized as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center. The unit consists of 10 beds with a patient census typically at 10. Common patient types include step-down ICU patients. Common diagnoses managed on this unit include respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, ARDS, and overdoses. Patients may be step downs from ICU or ER admissions and may include chronic home ventilators with static vent settings. Patient ratios are approximately 1 RN to 3-4 patients. Support staff includes CNAs who assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, assisting with turning patients, and hourly rounding. A unit secretary is available from 7 AM to 11 PM. Charge nurses may also have patient assignments. Phlebotomy is mainly managed by laboratory staff, while nurses can draw from central venous lines. There is a resource nurse available, and respiratory therapy and hospitalist services are provided 24/7. Telemetry monitoring is managed centrally. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. Staff will use specific IV pumps, medication dispensing systems, and monitors. Unit-specific equipment includes vital sign monitors, glucose stat strips, rapid infusers, and pain management devices. Floater nurses may be assigned within and below their scope as needed. Weekend rotation requires working 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12 in a six-week schedule. Each major holiday requires working one shift, including Thanksgiving or the day after, and either December 24 or 25, and December 31 or January 1. Requests for time off require manager approval. Scrub color for RNs is navy. The unit culture is described as busy, with a focus on teamwork.
