May be open to 48 hours/week guarantee as well. The facility has 247 licensed beds. It is a level 1 pediatric trauma center. The facility also serves as a teaching hospital, chest pain center, and certified stroke center. The unit has 24 beds with an average patient census of 21-23. Patient types include respiratory, trauma (which includes penetrating and non-accidental trauma), DKA, seizures, neurosurgical, acute/chronic renal failure, orthopedic, surgical, transplants (kidney and whole/partial liver), complex medical, and blood disorders. Patient ratios vary based on acuity at 2:1, 1:1, or 1:2. Support within the department includes one healthcare tech per day to support unit secretary duties and nursing support needs throughout the shift, a unit secretary every shift, and a charge nurse 24/7. Additional resources include phlebotomy and IV/VAT teams available 24/7, as well as resource nurses, respiratory therapists, intensivists, residents, and APPs. Telemetry monitoring is centralized and bedside monitoring is done. Floating may occur to Pediatric CVICU, NICU, neonatal PCU, and general pediatric units as required. No call for travelers; if the PICU cannot utilize them, they may be floated to other areas as needed.
