Job Title: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: PICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 3x12-hour rotating shifts, primarily nights (2 months nights followed by 1 month days) Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years of PICU experience required; experience with ECMO and CRRT preferred License: Valid RN license required Certifications: BLS, PALS (American Heart Association certification accepted) Must-Have: Ability to float within the scope as needed Description: The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provides intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0-18. The unit cares for patients with various medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical patients requiring immediate intensive care support, and neurological/neurosurgical cases. The unit offers advanced treatments such as ECMO and CRRT, along with renal or peritoneal dialysis. Pediatric palliative care services are available as needed. Staffing includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries. Therapeutic support services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacists are also available. The unit functions as a Level I trauma center and teaching facility. The daily census typically includes a mix of patients and the staffing ratios vary accordingly. Position responsibilities may include managing complex cases and admissions. Nurses are expected to have experience with invasive monitoring and interventions. The work environment fosters collaboration and continuous learning among healthcare professionals. Candidates must be prepared to provide compassionate care to critically ill pediatric patients. Weekend coverage is required, and holiday shifts may also be needed if contracted during those periods.
