The Medical-Surgical / Oncology Registered Nurse (MS/Oncology RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with acute medical conditions and cancer-related diagnoses. This role involves administering treatments, managing complex symptoms, delivering chemotherapy and supportive therapies (as applicable), and coordinating care across interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, evidence-based, and compassionate patient care.
Key Responsibilities Clinical CareAssess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans
Provide direct nursing care to medical-surgical and oncology patients
Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and chemotherapy (per certification and facility policy)
Monitor patients for treatment responses, side effects, and complications
Manage pain, nausea, fatigue, infection risk, and other oncology-related symptoms
Perform wound care, central line care, and post-procedure monitoring
Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatments, medications, and discharge plans
Provide emotional support to patients and families coping with cancer and chronic illness
Promote patient safety and self-care strategies
Collaborate with physicians, oncologists, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary teams
Accurately document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR)
Participate in care coordination, discharge planning, and patient handoffs
Follow infection control, safety, and regulatory standards
Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition and medical emergencies
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education
Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program (ADN or BSN)
Current, active RN license in the state of practice
BLS certification (required)
ACLS certification (preferred or may be required)
Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification (required or obtained within a specified timeframe, depending on facility)
Minimum of 1–2 years of recent acute care RN experience required
Medical-Surgical nursing experience required
Oncology nursing experience preferred (inpatient or outpatient)
New graduate RNs may be considered with residency or oncology training programs
Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
Knowledge of oncology treatments, symptom management, and safety protocols
Proficiency in IV therapy, central line care, and infusion administration
Excellent communication, documentation, and patient-education skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care
Ability to stand, walk, lift, and assist patients as needed
Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
Must meet facility health, background, and compliance requirements
