The RN Surgical Specialty provides direct nursing care to adult patients on a surgical/transplant unit, caring for a wide range of medical and post-operative conditions from simple to complex. Working under general supervision, this nurse supports transplant and surgical services while ensuring safe, high-quality, patient-centered care in a busy academic medical center environment.

• Assume responsibility and accountability for an assigned group of surgical/transplant patients, planning and coordinating all aspects of nursing care during the shift.

• Document patient assessments, responses to nursing interventions, and prescribed medical treatments accurately in the electronic health record.

• Assist physicians with patient examinations, minor procedures, and bedside diagnostics as needed on the surgical/transplant unit.

• Monitor and interpret physiological data (vital signs, labs, telemetry as applicable) and intervene according to clinical status and provider orders.

• Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products safely, following hospital policies, medication administration standards, and patient safety protocols.

• Deliver competent, safe, and effective patient care with attention to pain control, mobility, and prevention of complications such as infections or DVT.

• Communicate care plans and discharge instructions clearly to patients and families, including education on procedures, treatments, and follow-up needs.

• Inform patients and families about hospital routines and procedures, addressing questions and concerns in a timely, professional manner.

• Coordinate referrals and collaboration with physical therapy, case management, social work, transplant coordinators, and other team members.

• Delegate appropriate tasks to support staff (e.g., care team associates) and supervise completion in accordance with unit policies and scope of practice.

• Perform other related duties as assigned to support unit operations and patient flow.

• Minimum 1 year of RN experience in acute care; prior surgical, transplant, or med-surg experience preferred.

• Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.

• Active RN license in Oklahoma or current multistate compact (eNLC) license.

• Current BLS (AHA) certification; facility may require ACLS depending on unit policies.

• Knowledge of professional nursing standards, evidence-based practices, and hospital policies for surgical and transplant populations.

• Strong organizational, planning, and coordination skills with ability to prioritize multiple patients and tasks over a 12-hour shift.

• Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

• Cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and basic computer proficiency for EMR and electronic medication systems.

Preferred:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or current enrollment in a BSN program.

• Patient assessment and monitoring for surgical and transplant patients across varying levels of acuity.

• Medication and IV administration, including safe management of blood products and complex regimens common in transplant and post-op care.

• Accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record.

• Team collaboration with surgeons, transplant coordinators, advanced practice providers, and allied health professionals.

• Patient and family education related to surgery, transplant processes, recovery expectations, and discharge plans.

• Time management, prioritization, and delegation in a high-volume surgical/transplant unit.
