Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - EPIC experience - Total joint experience - Understanding of PCA pumps and reversal drugs (e.g., Narcan) - Experience with TPN and Lipids - Surgical experience Description: The unit accepts local clinicians who are quick start ready. The unit is a Med-Surg/Telemetry setting with inpatient surgical care. There are 48 beds split between two buildings. The nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-6 for nights and 1:5-6 for days. LPNs are available to assist on the unit, along with virtual admission and discharge nurses. A primary care nursing model is frequently used. The unit commonly admits patients with neuro surgeries, including laminectomies and cervical fusions. Other common diagnoses include operations for ostomies, hernia repairs, and total joint replacements. Patients may also require PICC line insertion, TPN, lipids, and dialysis catheter insertions. This unit manages chronic pain and sepsis cases, providing urgent OR care as needed. RNs are required to interpret their own telemetry strips, as there is a tele monitor technician monitoring the patients. The charge nurse usually has a smaller patient assignment during the day shift and may take an assignment during the night shift. Nurse aides are present but may be pulled to serve as sitters. The unit allows for 3-12 hour shifts starting at 7, but block scheduling is not guaranteed. Weekend work is required every other weekend. RNs are included in a holiday rotation with core staff. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating will only occur to similar units, and RNs will not take a patient load in higher acuity situations. The work environment is fast-paced and may involve admitting 8-12 surgical patients daily along with discharging others.
