Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Med Surg / Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Must have total joint experience. Understanding of PCA pumps and reversal drugs (Narcan). Experience with TPN and Lipids. 1 year of surgical experience required. Description: This is a Med Surg / Telemetry unit, focusing on inpatient surgical care. The unit consists of 48 beds and primarily handles neuro conditions, including laminectomies and cervical fusions. Other common procedures include belly surgeries, hernia repairs, and total joint replacements such as hips and knees. Nurses will manage infusions including PICC lines, TPN, and Lipids, as well as care for patients requiring dialysis. The nurse-to-patient ratio on nights is typically 1:5-6. LPNs and virtual admission and discharge nurses are available to assist. A primary care nursing model is frequently used, so adaptability is essential. EPIC experience is a must due to an upcoming system conversion. The environment can be fast-paced with a significant patient volume. Nurses should be prepared for up to 8-12 surgical admits per day. There is a Telemonitor Tech that monitors patients, while RNs are required to interpret cardiac strips. Charge nurses may take a smaller assignment to provide assistance. There is support from nurse aides, though they may be reassigned to other duties as needed. Shifts are organized 6 weeks in advance, with every other weekend required. Holiday coverage is also part of the rotation. Floating to similar units is permitted, but higher acuity units will only require nurses to assist without taking a full patient load. The unit utilizes equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP, which are managed by respiratory therapists. Nursing staff should expect to work with patients requiring advanced monitoring and care methods. Teamwork and collaboration are key components of this role.
