Job Title: Labor and Delivery Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 6 pm to 6 am Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 2 years License: Current, active Registered Nurse license in Colorado Certifications: Current BLS, ACLS; PALS, NRP preferred Must-Have: Minimum of an Associate's Degree (ADN) from an accredited nursing program Description: This role involves providing direct patient care and monitoring the health status of patients during labor, delivery, and the postpartum phase. The nurse will assist and educate mothers in breastfeeding and promote wellness for mothers both during pregnancy and after delivery through ongoing education. Providing education to mothers about infant care is a key responsibility. Documenting all patient care events and education in medical records utilizing computers is required. Effective communication regarding patient conditions, both verbally and in writing, to physicians and nursing supervisors is essential. The nurse will assist other staff in maintaining skills and learning new procedures and equipment. Collaboration with nursery nurses in the care of mothers and their infants is an important aspect of the job. Assisting physicians with procedures and supporting the nurse manager as requested is part of the role. The nurse may also assist staff with emergencies in other nursing units when possible. Maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment for all patients is critical. The physical demands include using hands to handle or feel, talking, and hearing. The nurse is required to frequently stand, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Occasionally, walking or sitting is required, and the ability to detect changes in odors is necessary. The nurse must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision for reading medical records and monitors, color vision for observing patient changes, and peripheral vision to be aware of surroundings while providing care. Adjusting focus while looking from patients to other areas is necessary.
