Job Title: L&D RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Must-Have: Ability to read and interpret fetal strips, critical thinking skills, previous travel experience, ability to titrate drips Description: The department has a total of 15 beds, which includes 7 for Labor & Delivery and 8 for Postpartum. There is one Operating Room suite available for C-Sections. On average, there are 58 births per month. Patient care ratios follow AWHONN guidelines: 1:1 for patients on pitocin, magnesium, or insulin drips; 1:3 for couplet care. Common patient diagnoses include obstetric conditions, hypertension, gestational diabetes, with a preference for deliveries at or beyond 36 weeks. RNs are required to read and interpret their own fetal strips. Critical thinking and adherence to quality metrics are essential. RNs may float to Med/Surg and ER within their skillset as needed. Titrating drips is a requirement, commonly including pitocin, insulin, and magnesium. Charge nurses are present on each shift and take patient assignments. Nursing assistants and surgical techs assist with vital signs, paperwork, and patient mobility. There is no OB/Neonatologist or Anesthesia in-house 24/7. Required medical equipment includes RT equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPap, and High Flow devices. Tele/monitor techs are not present on this unit. The electronic medical record system used is Meditech. Self-scheduling is not permitted; however, block scheduling is allowed. Every other weekend and holiday shifts are required. Scrub color for the unit is maroon, and scrubs are provided. Attributes that contribute to a nurse’s success on this unit include adaptability to change, strong critical thinking skills, and effective communication. The position is subject to a floating requirement that depends on staffing needs. The organization reserves the right to cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment.
