Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience required License: Valid RN license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Must-Have: 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience Some postpartum experience Comfortable working in both Labor and Delivery and Postpartum Ability to work with high-risk patients Ability to circulate in C-sections Description: The unit has 11 Labor and Delivery rooms that also serve as triage rooms. There are 2 C-Section suites and 2 PACU recovery bays on the floor. Typically, there are 2 designated triage rooms. The average is 4-5 triage patients per day who go home, excluding admitted patients. The unit has 17 postpartum beds. The unit averages 5-6 deliveries per day, totaling approximately 150-180 deliveries per month. Staffing follows established guidelines, with a 1:1 ratio for intra-partum patients, 1:1-3 for antepartum, and 1:3-4 for postpartum. Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring. Common diagnoses include patients over 30 weeks gestation. Patients under 30 weeks are stabilized and transferred out. Experience with titrating drips is required, including Pitocin and Magnesium. Insulin drip experience is preferred but training is available. The charge nurse generally does not take a patient assignment unless absolutely necessary. Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager provide support during both shifts but are not in-house 24/7. Anesthesia services are available 24/7 and respiratory therapy services are available around the clock. Telemetry techs are in-house, while RNs are expected to identify rhythm changes and basic rhythms. The electronic fetal monitoring system used is EPIC. Scheduling is managed 6 weeks in advance, with flexibility expected from travelers. Weekend and holiday rotations are required as needed. Travelers may be floated for sitter shifts throughout the facility as necessary. RNs wear navy blue scrubs. Orientation includes three days with a preceptor in both Labor and Delivery and Postpartum. The working environment promotes strong relationships between nursing staff and providers. The facility supports a Level 3 NICU for patients over 30 weeks gestation. Resource Nurses assist with triage, deliveries, and supporting nursing staff and do not take patient assignments unless required.
