The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to women during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. This role involves close monitoring of maternal and fetal well-being, administering medications and treatments, assisting with deliveries, and providing education and emotional support to patients and their families. The RN collaborates closely with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatal teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
Key ResponsibilitiesAssess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for laboring and postpartum patients
Monitor maternal vital signs, labor progression, and fetal heart rate patterns
Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and anesthesia-related medications as prescribed
Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal and cesarean deliveries
Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric emergencies (e.g., fetal distress, postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia)
Provide patient and family education regarding labor processes, pain management options, breastfeeding, and postpartum care
Support patients emotionally and physically during labor and delivery
Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including OB providers, anesthesia, NICU, and postpartum staff
Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and quality standards
Advocate for patient safety, comfort, and informed decision-making
Labor and Delivery units within hospitals or birthing centers
Fast-paced, high-acuity setting with 24/7 coverage
Shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing (state-specific or compact license preferred)
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Minimum 1–2 years of recent Labor and Delivery nursing experience
Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
ACLS certification
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, and health requirements
Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) or Fetal Monitoring certification
PALS certification
Experience with high-risk obstetrics and cesarean section support
Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) systems
Expertise in maternal and fetal assessment
Ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations
Strong patient advocacy and emotional support skills
Effective time management and multitasking abilities
Collaboration and teamwork in high-acuity settings
Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods
Ability to lift, position, and assist patients safely
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
