Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 12 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active Registered Nurse license Certifications: BLS NRP Fetal Monitoring training Must-Have: Labor and delivery experience including the ability to labor and recover the mother. Experience in transitioning the newborn including assessment. Experience with shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, and other potential obstetrical emergencies preferred. Fetal monitoring education and experience with inductions (Pitocin, cervidil). Description: Unit has 9 labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum beds, 1 obstetrical emergency department bed, and 4 NICU beds. Includes 1 operating room suite for procedures. Patient ratios are 1:1 for active labors, inductions, and C-sections. Couplet care is 1:3 for newborns until stable. Intermediate care in NICU is 1:3 with 2 NICU nurses required if patients are present. No techs or unit secretaries available on the unit. Equipment used includes central monitoring, IV pumps, infant warmers, telemetry, bili-blankets, and PCA pumps. Documentation system utilized is Meditech and central monitoring. Full-time staff work 3 shifts per week, rotating weekends and holidays. Staff may float if scheduled and not needed in their unit. Daily rounding on all patients and safety rounding is required. Advanced skills in fetal monitoring are essential. Procedures performed include C-sections, circumcisions, intra-uterine monitoring, and vacuum or forceps assisted deliveries. The unit has experienced RNs with approximately 30 years of experience each serving as valuable resources and preceptors. Several other nurses have been with the unit for 7-10 years and are also experienced and competent. The unit works as a cohesive team and is willing to assist one another. As this is a labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum unit, it provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care.
