Description: This position involves prioritizing and performing a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests on various biological specimens. The role includes reviewing, evaluating, documenting, and reporting results. Confidentiality of patients must be preserved while following lab safety and maintenance protocols. Training and supervision of trainees, laboratory assistants, and clerks may be required as needed. Essential functions include employing positive patient identification procedures to ensure specimen integrity for testing. Proper specimen collection, labeling, handling, preservation, processing, transportation, and storage must be performed. Adherence to confidentiality guidelines and regulations is mandatory. Lab orders must be prioritized according to type and various testing must be performed following prescribed quality assurance policies and procedures. Quality control checks must be performed, evaluated, and documented. Reviewing testing results for validity and understanding the interdependency of tests is essential. Correlating test results with diagnoses and addressing incompatible results is necessary. Thorough documentation and communication of test results, especially critical values, must be expeditiously conducted. Contaminated materials and equipment must be disposed of according to policy, ensuring the work area is cleansed after each test. Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration are required as needed. Inventory and restocking of reagents, calibrators, controls, and supplies must be managed. Participation in data collection and evaluation for Performance Improvement evaluations is expected. Adverse events must be documented using the incident reporting tool. Orientation, instruction, and supervision of laboratory assistants and clerks may be part of the job. Other job-related duties may be assigned as necessary.
